What we covered

What happens after product-market fit

Intercom's Des Traynor and April Dunford both anchor on the same problem — the industry obsesses over reaching PMF but has surprisingly little to say about the operating decisions that follow it. The 2019 mainstage delivered both perspectives back to back.

Brand, marketing & demand in 2019

SocialChorus CMO Alison Murdock on building brand that generates demand for enterprise SaaS, and the GTM operators thinking through the marketing function as the funnel got harder to push through.

Sales as a science

Jacco vanderKooij on the Winning by Design method and why the unicorn-or-walking-dead framing of B2B SaaS kills founder confidence — drawn from thousands of SaaS sales-team engagements.

Building European SaaS winners

G2's Godard Abel on what 21 years and four founded SaaS companies taught him about European founders specifically — and Personio's Hanno Renner on why sustainable growth would be the top SaaS trend of 2020.

Recap

What happened at SaaStock Europe 2019.

SaaStock Europe 2019 ran in Dublin in mid-October 2019 — the fourth SaaStock and, in retrospect, the last pre-pandemic flagship. The lineup that year was the deepest of any pre-2022 SaaStock: April Dunford on positioning, Patrick Campbell on founder leverage, Jacco vanderKooij on sales as a science, Godard Abel on building global SaaS winners, Des Traynor on the post-PMF question, and Hanno Renner of Personio calling sustainable growth as the trend of 2020 — exactly six months before COVID made it the only trend that mattered.

Two of the most-watched 2019 keynotes addressed the same question from different angles. April Dunford (positioning consultant and author of Obviously Awesome) gave the room "When product-market fit does not equal growth" — arguing that the industry's "we know it when we have it" definition of PMF is what makes founders scale GTM spend behind products that aren't actually ready. Des Traynor (Co-founder & CSO, Intercom) followed with "What happens after product-market fit?" — anchoring on the Sean Ellis 40-percent-very-disappointed test and asking the question Intercom had kept getting wrong: do you build more products, or build a better product? He made the case for one of them.

Patrick Campbell (CEO, ProfitWell) turned the lens inward with "How to build a SaaS business that outlives you" — 20 minutes on the founder rather than the company, anchored on two lessons: find leverage, and seek truth. His framing was that your team, your culture, and your vision are emblematic of you as a human being, so the bad habits you don't get rid of will scale with the company. Jacco vanderKooij (Founder, Winning by Design) closed the sales track with the unicorn-or-walking-dead critique — why the standard B2B SaaS framing kills founder confidence — and the science-first sales method he'd been refining across thousands of engagements.

On the operator-at-scale track, Godard Abel (Co-founder & CEO, G2) — 21 years and four founded SaaS companies in — argued that European founders had a structural advantage in building global winners if they could resist a few specific anti-patterns. Alison Murdock (CMO, SocialChorus) closed the marketing track with a defence of long-term brand work for enterprise-SaaS GTM. Hanno Renner (CEO, Personio) called sustainable growth as the top SaaS trend of 2020 — a call that COVID would render almost immediately, accurate, and almost universally adopted. SaaStock Europe paused its in-person flagship in 2020 and returned to Dublin in October 2022.
