In this episode of the SaaS Revolution Show, our host Alex Theuma is joined by Rob Walling, Co-Founder TinySeed, who shares how to build a $1 million startup with zero venture capital.
Don’t model your goals after the people who have been doing this for ten years. So, I have this thing called the ‘stair-step method’ of entrepreneurship, and it’s start small, and then build your way up through multiple products. That’s, I think, the biggest takeaway is, a lot of people will idolise a Jason Cohen, who started WP Engine, Dharmesh Shah who started HubSpot, right, so ‘I want to start WP Engine tomorrow – and I’ve never been an entrepreneur but that’s what I want to do’ and that’s like – wait let’s go back. Jason Cohen had two successful startups before he did WP Engine, Dharmesh had a successful startup before HubSpot, so, start small, don’t try to compete in the major leagues when you haven’t even played tee-ball.
Rob shares:
- Why he’s spent 17 years helping founders
- The story behind selling Drip
- If bootstrapping is more commonplace/ easier in recent years
- Three key takeaways to get from zero to $1M
- What every bootstrapper in that revenue range should be doing
- The hardest thing about building a startup in 2023
